Basic sentence

ベッドが　２つ　あります。

Beddo ga futatsu arimasu.There are two beds.

Use

1. Used when saying how many of something exists.

Structure

N1 (Place)	に	N2 (Inanimate object)	が	Number ＋ Counter	あります。
				いくつ	ありますか。

N1 (Place)	に	N2 (Living creature)	が	Number ＋ Counter	います。
				なんにん	いますか。

Examples

①たなかさんの　いえに　いすが　２つ　あります。

　Tanaka-san no ie ni isu ga futatsu arimasu.　There are two chairs in Mr. Tanaka's house.

②A：いえに　へやが　いくつ　ありますか。

　A: Ie ni heya ga ikutsu arimasu ka.　A: How many rooms are there in your home?

　B：３つ　あります。

　B: Mittsu arimasu.　B: There are three.

③A：１０４の　へやに　がくせいが　なんにん　いますか。

　A: Ichi-zero-yon no heya ni gakusee ga nan-nin imasu ka.　A: How many students are there in room 104?

　B：ふたり　います。

　B: Futari imasu.　B: There are two students.

Commentary

1. A.　「number＋counters」 indicates quantity.
2. B.　「～つ」is used when counting things and「～にん」when counting people.
